Aggie Square Announces UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory as New Research Tenant

Aggie Square, the innovation district anchored by the University of California, Davis, in partnership with Wexford Science & Technology LLC, has announced the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) as its newest research tenant. The world-class laboratory, known for its pioneering animal DNA testing and genetics services, is situated within UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine, the No. 1 veterinary program in the nation

A Very Serious Game

Few moments are more intense than when a first responder arrives on the scene of a crisis. Few first responses are more fraught than those involving behavioral health: crises that feature issues of mental health, substance use, or overdose.

This June at the Aggie Square Launch Space on Stockton Blvd in Sacramento, UC Davis Sociology Lecturer Elizabeth Siggins brought together the full range of working professionals who deal with crisis response to develop new and better ways to do their work by playing a very serious tabletop game.

Saving Local Flavor

Aaron Anderson, owner of Purple Pig Eats, a well-loved Oak Park walk-up restaurant was faced with the difficult decision to close up his “Orange Shack”, a food operation just across the street from the Aggie Square project site, due to financial issues.  When the Aggie Square construction team heard about the closure, they got in touch with Aaron and offered him a way to continue offering his great breakfast and lunch fare for the hundreds of construction workers on the site daily. 

May Community Engagement Meeting Recap

On May 30, 2024, the Aggie Square Community Engagement meeting was held at UC Davis Betty Irene Moore Hall (School of Nursing), and was hosted by UC Davis, the City of Sacramento, and Wexford Science + Technology. The agenda included a general update on Aggie Square, information on job, workforce development and career pathways, and an open house session with organizations.

The Social Lab

A key part of activation and engagement within the Aggie Square Innovation District (what Wexford refers to as a Knowledge Community) is the access to space that can be used for curated programming, community-related convenings, impromptu meetings, and just general moments of serendipitous collisions. Covering part of the first and second floors in the Life Long Learning Building (LLL) is the Social Lab.

 

Career & Resource Fair Recap

On Friday, April 19th, UC Davis, the City of Sacramento, Pivot Sac and SETA/Sacramento Works co-hosted a community career resource fair at Fruitridge Community Collaborative to connect community members with resources and supports for employment and workforce training.
