Innovation and Economic Development Office Communications Manager

Aggie Square is looking for a creative and strategic Communications Manager to join the Innovation and Economic Development Office (IEDO). This role will drive engaging communications for university-wide innovation, from Aggie Square, Venture Catalyst and Health Ventures. You'll collaborate with campus colleagues, tell the stories of groundbreaking research, and amplify UC Davis innovation. If you’re passionate about writing, media, and connecting people to transformative projects, this is the perfect role for you!

Roots to the Future

When first faced with landscaping plans at Aggie Square, Erik Prince, landscape architect, noticed trees used in the parking lot, some that were part of the original State Fair site, and he sought out a way to preserve these trees. Honoring the past use of the land is something Erik values, and with Whiting-Turner and UC Davis, Erik discovers a way to keep these trees a part of Aggie Square: using the wood for benches that will be used in the outdoor spaces of the innovation district.

Vibrant Public Art Set to Blossom—and Expand—at Aggie Square

Originally, two vibrant murals were envisioned to welcome the public to new buildings in the UC Davis Aggie Square knowledge community slated to open in early 2025. But there was “a plot twist no one saw coming,” as Wexford Science and Technology vice president of development Claire Drummond put it in an email: the committee for the artists’ selection process loved the finalists’ designs so much that they chose to invest in a third mural to a Connect Labs space, removing a planned moss wall in favor of adding more public art.

Sacramento Artists Invited to Apply for Aggie Square Public Art Phase 2 - Interior Murals

The City of Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture, in partnership with UC Davis, are inviting Sacramento artists to apply to design and create two murals that will be located at Aggie Square. This is the second phase of public murals. Those with experience in studio painting, large scale designs, environmental designs, or murals are encouraged to apply. Those who reside in or have historic, personal, or cultural connections to the land in Sacramento County or Yolo County will be given additional consideration.

A Very Serious Game

Few moments are more intense than when a first responder arrives on the scene of a crisis. Few first responses are more fraught than those involving behavioral health: crises that feature issues of mental health, substance use, or overdose.

This June at the Aggie Square Launch Space on Stockton Blvd in Sacramento, UC Davis Sociology Lecturer Elizabeth Siggins brought together the full range of working professionals who deal with crisis response to develop new and better ways to do their work by playing a very serious tabletop game.

Saving Local Flavor

Aaron Anderson, owner of Purple Pig Eats, a well-loved Oak Park walk-up restaurant was faced with the difficult decision to close up his “Orange Shack”, a food operation just across the street from the Aggie Square project site, due to financial issues.  When the Aggie Square construction team heard about the closure, they got in touch with Aaron and offered him a way to continue offering his great breakfast and lunch fare for the hundreds of construction workers on the site daily.
