Wexford has hired Nichole (Nikki) Sims to serve as the founding site director of the Sacramento location of Connect Labs by Wexford set to open in March 2025 at Wexford’s Knowledge Community, Aggie Square.
A well-known innovator within Sacramento, Nikki joins Connect Labs from Growth Factory where she managed portfolio companies and strategic relationships, driving growth in health and life science sectors.
When first faced with landscaping plans at Aggie Square, Erik Prince, landscape architect, noticed trees used in the parking lot, some that were part of the original State Fair site, and he sought out a way to preserve these trees. Honoring the past use of the land is something Erik values, and with Whiting-Turner and UC Davis, Erik discovers a way to keep these trees a part of Aggie Square: using the wood for benches that will be used in the outdoor spaces of the innovation district.

A key element in the vision of Aggie Square is sustainability—a broad concept that encompasses and inspired the massive project’s design at all levels, from its use of all-electric energy sources down to the details of reducing the carbon footprint from transporting materials with the use of locally produced brick and glass envelope.
Connect Labs by Wexford, the flexible, scale-in-place lab and innovation infrastructure offering located within Wexford Science & Technology, LLC’s dynamic and amenity-rich Knowledge Communities is set to open its third location in March 2025 at Aggie Square in Sacramento, California.
On May 30, 2024, the Aggie Square Community Engagement meeting was held at UC Davis Betty Irene Moore Hall (School of Nursing), and was hosted by UC Davis, the City of Sacramento, and Wexford Science + Technology. The agenda included a general update on Aggie Square, information on job, workforce development and career pathways, and an open house session with organizations.
A key part of activation and engagement within the Aggie Square Innovation District (what Wexford refers to as a Knowledge Community) is the access to space that can be used for curated programming, community-related convenings, impromptu meetings, and just general moments of serendipitous collisions. Covering part of the first and second floors in the Life Long Learning Building (LLL) is the Social Lab.
The Translating Engineering Advances to Medicine (TEAM) Lab at UC Davis is a unit within Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis’ College of Engineering. The lab designs and manufactures devices to support research and to solve problems in human and veterinary health.
Quarter at Aggie Square is an academic program offered by UC Davis for undergraduates at UC Davis Sacramento campus that consists of coursework, internships, and community engagement of up to 18 units towards graduation. Different topics are taught each academic quarter. Quarter at Aggie Square’s 2022 fall quarter Biomedical Engineering cohort won the 2023 Big Bang! Competition in spring 2023 with Square Solutions, one of their two medical innovations.
The February 29, 2024 Aggie Square Community Engagement meeting was held at the Oak Park Community Center and was hosted by UC Davis, the City of Sacramento, and Wexford Science + Technology. The agenda included a general update on Aggie Square, a look at Wexford’s philosophy related to public art and an overview of the upcoming opportunity for local artists to provide original murals for Aggie Square interior spaces.
